The Chinese zodiac, known as Shēngxiào, is a repeating 12-year cycle where each year is represented by an animal and its attributed personality traits. Unlike Western astrology, which is based on birth month, the Chinese zodiac is determined by your birth year. With roots stretching back over 2,000 years, it remains one of the most widely followed astrological systems in the world.
The Legend of the Great Race
According to Chinese mythology, the Jade Emperor held a great race across a river to determine the order of the zodiac animals. The clever Rat hitched a ride on the Ox's back and leapt ahead at the last moment to finish first. The Ox came second, followed by the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and finally the Pig, who stopped to eat and nap along the way.
The 12 Animal Signs
Rat (2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976)
Quick-witted, resourceful, and adaptable. Rats are natural strategists who can find opportunity in any situation. They are charming in social settings but deeply private about their inner world. In business and relationships, Rats are shrewd judges of character.
Ox (2025, 2013, 2001, 1989, 1977)
Diligent, dependable, and strong-willed. The Ox is the worker of the zodiac — they achieve through persistence, not shortcuts. Honest to a fault, an Ox's word is their bond. They are patient with others but expect the same level of dedication in return.
Tiger (2026, 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978)
Brave, competitive, and magnetic. Tigers are born leaders who command attention without trying. They are fiercely protective of those they love and will fight for justice when they see it lacking. Their challenge is impulsiveness — thinking before leaping is a lifelong practice.
Rabbit (2023, 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975)
Gentle, elegant, and quietly ambitious. Rabbits are the diplomats of the Chinese zodiac — they avoid conflict and use grace and intelligence to navigate challenges. They have impeccable taste and a talent for creating beauty in their surroundings.
Dragon (2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976)
Confident, ambitious, and larger than life. The Dragon is the most revered sign in Chinese culture, symbolizing power, luck, and success. Dragons are natural performers and visionaries who dream on a grand scale. Their fiery energy can overwhelm quieter souls, but their generosity is equally immense.
Snake (2025, 2013, 2001, 1989, 1977)
Wise, intuitive, and mysterious. Snakes are deep thinkers who observe far more than they reveal. They have a magnetic allure and a natural instinct for finding the truth beneath the surface. Financially, Snakes tend to be fortunate — they make careful, calculated decisions.
Horse (2026, 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978)
Energetic, free-spirited, and sociable. Horses love adventure, travel, and the thrill of new experiences. They are hard workers but need variety to stay engaged. In friendships, Horses are warm, generous, and the life of every gathering.
Goat (2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979)
Creative, gentle, and compassionate. Goats (also called Sheep) are the artists and dreamers of the zodiac. They have a rich inner world and a strong need for harmony in their environment. Though sometimes seen as indecisive, their hesitation usually stems from a desire to consider everyone's feelings.
Monkey (2028, 2016, 2004, 1992, 1980)
Clever, playful, and endlessly inventive. Monkeys can solve any problem with wit and creativity. They are excellent entertainers with a sharp sense of humor and a gift for making people laugh. Their restless intelligence means they bore easily and always need a new challenge.
Rooster (2029, 2017, 2005, 1993, 1981)
Observant, hardworking, and courageous. Roosters are perfectionists who take pride in their appearance, their work, and their principles. They are honest — sometimes brutally so — and expect the same directness from others. Beneath the polished exterior is a deeply loyal and devoted heart.
Dog (2030, 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982)
Loyal, honest, and protective. Dogs are the most trustworthy sign in the Chinese zodiac. They are devoted friends and partners who will stand by you through anything. Their sense of justice is strong, and they will fight fiercely for those who cannot fight for themselves.
Pig (2031, 2019, 2007, 1995, 1983)
Generous, compassionate, and sincere. Pigs enjoy the good things in life — food, comfort, and the company of people they love. They are optimistic and trusting, sometimes to a fault. But their genuine warmth and lack of pretense make them universally liked and deeply valued.
The Five Elements
Each zodiac year is also associated with one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — which further shapes personality. The complete cycle takes 60 years (12 animals × 5 elements). For example, a Water Tiger (2022) has a different energy than a Fire Tiger (1986).
- Wood — Growth, creativity, flexibility
- Fire — Passion, energy, leadership
- Earth — Stability, patience, practicality
- Metal — Strength, determination, resilience
- Water — Wisdom, intuition, adaptability
